About the Artist

Jila Nikpay is a filmmaker and photographer who has received numerous awards from the Minnesota State Arts Board, as well as the Jerome and McKnight Foundations. Her work has been exhibited at the Walker Art Center, Tehran Contemporary Museum, Minnesota Historical Society, Print Center in Philadelphia among many other venues. Nikpay’s work is in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Modern Art library and many private collections throughout the U.S.

A gifted educator, Nikpay teaches the art of portraiture through a variety of innovative workshops that are offered through the Minnesota Center for Photography and the University of Minnesota.

She recently published her first book of portraits and poetry as part of her Heroines Project and currently is working on her upcoming film, In Waiting.

Artist statement:

Everyone has a story, a public persona and a hidden self.  I respect the boundaries people create to protect their public persona. I also love the opportunity to go on a journey of discovery with my sitters in which we find many reflections of the self but we choose one that wants to be seen.
